The O’Jays formed in 1958 and consisted of a group of friends from Canton, Ohio. The original members were Eddie Levert, Walter Williams, William Powell, Bobby Massey and Bill Isles. A trio is what remains of the originals. Completing the trio is Levert, Williams and newcomer, Sammy Strain. The soul singers were a staple for smooth, soulful love ballads throughout the disco era. The O’Jays experienced great success in the music industry over the next couple of decades with hits such as “Back Stabbers”, “Love Train”, and “Livin for the Weekend.” In 1967, The O’Jays landed their first Top Ten single “I’ll Be Sweeter Tomorrow (Than I Was Today.)”
During their reign, the O’Jays were labeled soul’s greatest vocal group of the 1970s.
In 2009 at the 2009 BET Award Show, the O'Jays were honored with BET's 2009 Life Time Achievement Award for decades of outstanding entertaining. The group was inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2004, The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005, and has also topped the Billboard Hot 100 with Number One hits such as “For the Love of Money.”
