Wayne Toups Returns to His Louisiana Roots
Paragon Casino Resort is excited to welcome back Cajun musician, Wayne Toups, to the Mari Showroom on Saturday, January 31 at 8pm. Tickets are $10 and are on sale now.
Toups is a native of Crowley, LA. He’s famous for combining Zydeco, Cajun and R&B. These genres fused together are referred to as “ZydeCajun.” Zydeco enthusiasts get the best of all worlds including a Cajun spicy blend of folk, rock and R&B styles. Born to a French-speaking rice farmer in Crowley, LA, Toups was reared in bayou music from boyhood. He learned to play Cajun accordion at age thirteen and was soon on stage in local talent contests playing the tunes of Iry LaJeune and other industry greats of Cajun culture.
With thirteen albums to his name, he stays true to his Louisiana roots and Cajun heritage. He debuted fusion style on a 1987 album called “ZydeCajun.” He's been criss-crossing musical genres ever since. Signed to Mercury Records, Toups became the first Cajun act to crack the Top Pop Albums chart when “Blast From the Bayou” hit the air waves in 1989. He was tapped to sing the theme song for TV's Broken Badges series and his "Two Step Mamou" appeared on the soundtrack of the hit movie Steel Magnolias.
In 2009, he received the album of the year award from Offbeat Magazine for “Live 2009.” In 2010, he was inducted into The Louisiana Music Hall of Fame, and in 2011, Gulf Coast Hall of Fame and Cajun French Music Hall of Fame. Toups’ high energy performances and rocking flow has kept his audiences entertained as he’s sold out shows across the country. Crowds go wild for "Zydecajun Train," "Sugar Bee," "Johnny Can't Dance" and "Sweet Joline." He incorporates the soul music of Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin, Percy Sledge and Wilson Pickett into his sound. Other musical influences from rock bands such as The Doobie Brothers, Lynard Skynyrd and The Allman Brothers has helped tune his unique Zydecajun style. He’s also played his accordion on singles with Mark Chestnutt, Clay Walker and Alan Jackson.
